El Salvador

El Salvador is a country of short distances but of deep, volcanic emotions. Roque Dalton, its most universal poet, loved his country with a heartbreaking intensity. Salvadoran culture is marked by that same passion and resistance. Traveling to El Salvador means discovering the unwavering warmth of its people, surfing the Pacific waves, and understanding that the beauty of this country lies in the vital force of its inhabitants.
"When you know that I have died, say strange syllables. Pronounce flower, bee, tear, bread, storm." — Roque Dalton

Is El Salvador Safe to Travel in 2026?

Short answer: yes, for ordinary travel. El Salvador closed 2025 with 82 homicides nationwide — 1.3 per 100,000 people, lower than Canada, and the U.S. State Department reissued its Level 1 “exercise normal precautions” rating on June 25, 2026. That is the lowest tier it gives any country.

The longer answer is worth your five minutes. The State of Exception is still in force, embassy staff still avoid highways after dark, and the risk that actually sends visitors to a hospital here is the Pacific rip current — not crime. We wrote the version we would give a friend.
